Update and Motivation

We are moving into our sixth month of therapies for Liam and good things are happening. Liam’s social skills are slowly improving, and his fine motor skills are nearly at a developmental appropriate level. His language/communication has also improved and he isn’t as frustrated as he use to be.

Tomorrow we get to start hippotherapy and we are THRILLED to see what happens when Liam gets to ride a horse! We will also be driving into Chicago next week to discuss a diagnosis for our little man with a team of professionals.

As we move through each new stage, we see more and more of Liam and we are so thankful for that.  One of the things we are learning about is what motivates him. Motivation is key when it comes to getting him out of his comfort zone and to start making strides in new development.

What motivates him?

Swings are motivating; apples are motivating; Word World is motivating; and ANIMALS are motivating.

Motivation has really come alive for Liam lately. Whether it be a dear friend and her dog coming over to play or really wanting to eat an apple, Liam has begun communicate his needs and feelings to us and that opens up a whole new world of possibilites for learning.

Just now, I put him down for a nap and as I was doing homework I heard him saying “GOOOOO” over and over. He use to say this word a lot when we played a dinner game with him, but he lost it about 4-6 weeks ago. It made us a little heavy hearted, but because we know losing language is something we deal with, we didn’t take it to heart.

As I was listening to him say “GO!” over and over, I realized that he was motivated. He was motivated to GET OUT OF A NAP.

This is good news. He’s becoming more aware of his surroundings and interacting with them and engaging in life WITH us. We have a long journey ahead of us, but we are so thankful for the little milestones we reach. Thank you to all of you who are praying for us and anticipate with us the obstacles that Liam will overcome!!
